Our Brand Story

Why Shimenawa, Now?

The Special Meaning Shimenawa Brings to Us

In uncertain times, it becomes essential to hold onto one’s sense of self and allow strength to reside within.

As a contemporary art sculptor, while pursuing modern artistic expression, I have also restored numerous traditional Japanese sculptures. Through this process, I came to realize something profound:
ancient forms possess a unique power that speaks directly to the individual.

By devoting myself entirely to Japanese sculpture and living alongside these works, I felt energy rise within me, my mind settle, and a sense of courage and strength take shape.
As a manifestation of this inner state, I created a three-meter-long arm sculpture and adorned it with a shimenawa—an ancient symbol of protection—transforming it into an arm where divinity resides.

In our daily lives, there are moments when we need reassurance and unseen strength.
For those who have arrived here, accessories are no longer mere decoration.
They serve as talismans, protective charms, emotional anchors, and expressions of meaning, embodying the spiritual values the Japanese people have safeguarded for centuries.

As a sculptor rooted in contemporary art, I return to this fundamental purpose—creating works that answer the question:
“Why do we wear this?”

Above all, shimenawa is a symbol of spirituality—a sacred boundary that protects holy space, and at the same time, proof that divinity resides within.
Its form holds meanings beyond warding off evil; it represents a profound connection between humans and the divine.

It embodies something essential that modern society has nearly forgotten—
a soul-like force that connects our very existence.

This spirituality can be worn effortlessly in everyday life, seamlessly integrating with fashion and personal identity.
This series is offered in three variations—Thick, Standard, and Slim—each with its own design language and symbolic nuance, suitable for both daily wear and special occasions.

Another defining aspect of this work is that every step, from design to production, is carried out by my own hands.
These are not accessories created for mass production or fleeting trends.

Their value lies in becoming part of the wearer’s soul—
a source of inner strength, authentic self-expression, and a quietly distinctive personal style.

Drawing upon specialized techniques developed through the restoration of over one hundred Buddhist sculptures, I finish each piece with care, striving to bring out its full meaning and inherent power.
By merging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary approaches, every piece becomes truly one of a kind.

The special strength these works bring into daily life—
a sense of calm, confidence, and inner richness
is the true value we aim to deliver.

Yet we do not stop here.
Our brand will continue to evolve alongside you, expanding our production capabilities and product range to share this value with more people.

What will never change is our commitment to the question:
“Why do we wear it?”

You, too, can carry this special meaning and power into your everyday life.

That is my true wish—
Kenichi Asano.
